Third seed Svetlana Kuznetsova has been knocked out of U.S. Open 2008 at the third round after losing to Slovenia’s Katarina Srebotnik in three sets on Friday. Her elimination came just a day after top seed Ana Ivanovic had crashed out of the tournament in the second round, becoming the first of the top three seed to have been eliminated.

Svetlana Kuznetsova lost the 2-hour 20-minute long match by 6-3, 6-7 (1-7), 6-3. In the first set, everything was going well until the eighth game when the 28th ranked Katarina Srebotnik broke Kuznetsova thanks to few faults by the Russian. Srebotnik took the first set 6-3 in which the Slovenian produced six aces. Kuznetsova came back winning the hard-fought second set in tie breaker, but stumbled again in the third set as her opponent achieved an early break and sealed the set 6-3 on her third match point.

All through the match Katarina Srebotnik played well, while Kuznetsova struggled to survive. So, within third round two of the top three seed have been out of the women’s singles of U.S. Open 2008. In the fourth round, Srebotnik will face the winner of third round match between Patty Schnyder and Magdalena Rybarikova.
