Brazil will face Cameroon in the quarter final of men’s football event in Beijing Olympic Games 2008 tomorrow. In their bid to win first ever Olympic gold medal in football, Brazil will look to outclass the Africa’s ‘Indomitable Lions’, Cameroon. The match will take place at the Shenyang Olympic Stadium, Shenyang on 16 August 2008. There no doubt, both teams will try their best to win the match to get into the semi final of the tournament.
Match: Brazil vs Cameroon, Quarter Final, Beijing Olympic Games 2008
Date: 16 August 2008
Venue: Shenyang Olympic Stadium, Shenyang
Kick off: 18:00 (CST)
Brazil was drawn in Group C in the preliminary round and they reached the quarter final with 100 percent winning record. There is no doubt, Brazil has been in an excellent form so far in the tournament with scoring 9 goals in three games and has not conceded any goal yet. In the first match, Brazil did not look as impressive as they were expected to, though they pulled off 1-0 victory. However, the Brazilian team bounced back with their typical form in the second match, defeating New Zealand 5-0, before outclassing host China 3-0 in the last match of the preliminary round.
Cameroon reached the quarter final as the Group D runner up. The African side launched their Olympic campaign with 1-1 draw against South Korea in the opening match, but they picked up three points in the second match thanks to their 1-0 victory over Honduras. In the last group match, Cameroon shared points with group champion Italy as the match ended in a goalless draw. You can say that Cameroon’s performance was not as solid as Brazil. They netted only 2 goals and conceded 1 in three matches.
Brazil team disappointed their fans in 2006 world cup as they failed to reach the semi final after losing to eventual runner up France in the quarter final. Moreover, Brazil could not ever win Olympic gold medal in football, even though they are the five-time world cup winner. So, you can now guess the guile of Brazilian team for an Olympic gold medal.
Similarly, Cameroon also strives for success as they could not win any title in the recent past. Cameroon is considered as one of the best sides in Africa and they played a big role behind the rise of African football in late 80’s of the last century. Having said that, the African lions failed to qualify for 2006 world cup and the last time Cameroon won the title of African Nations Cup was in 2002.

Though they could reach the final of this year’s African Nations Cup, they ended up winning the runner up trophy. No doubt, winning runner up trophy in the continental tournament did not satisfy Cameroon fans and they are now expecting something special in Beijing Olympics Games. So, Cameroon players will also be determined to stave off the challenge of Brazil team and will look to come up with a victory against Brazil.
Cameroon can take inspiration from their previous record. Though Brazil could never win gold medal in Olympic, Cameroon already tasted it eight years back in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. So far, that Olympic Gold medal has remained their best ever success in international stage. En route to win the gold medal, Cameroon defeated Brazil in the quarter final and their 2-1 extra time victory will definitely inspire them ahead of another quarter final Olympic meeting with Brazil. The African powerhouse then went on to win the gold medal defeating Spain 5-3 in penalty shoot out in the final. Cameroon has another success against Brazil that came in 2003 Confederation’s Cup where Samuel Eto’o scored a later winner for Cameroon.
However, Cameroon is currently running without Eto’o as his club Barcelona did not let him participate in Beijing Olympics. Moreover, Cameroon coach Martin Ndtoungou has a thing or two to worry about ahead of the match as he will not get two of his key players due to suspension in the match against Brazil. Midfielder Georges Mandjeck was sent off in the match against Italy and defender Paul Bebey was shown second yellow card in the same match.
Brazil, on the other hand, is looking for the opponent’s disadvantage ahead of the match. Assistant coach Jorginho said that Cameroon naturally play attacking football without giving much thought about their defense and this is where Brazil would seek to create opportunity. The current Brazilian side has a number of quality players including Ronaldinho, Anderson who are capable of producing enough impact in the match to bring the result in favor of them.

I think, both sides have equal chance in the match, though Brazil seems to be favorite on pen and paper. It will be very tough to say who are going to win the match, but if Cameroon appears with their own style of African power football and Brazil comes up with their artistic style of attacking football with the bits of Samba dance, then be sure you are going to experience an once-in-a-lifetime match tomorrow at the Shenyang Olympic Stadium. I am just hoping for such an exciting match.
