Today (20 October 2008), I attended the press conference of the inauguration ceremony of GreatWall Laptop Computers in Bangladesh hosted by Miracom Technologies Ltd. I wonder how many of you know about GreatWall Laptop Computers. If you did not know about it then it is no problem because GreatWall Laptop Computers are not that familiar in the western market. So, you will not get a lot of information about the company and its products in internet. However, I was surprised to see a laptop under 30,000 Taka. A number of journalists from different newspapers and magazines attended the press conference.

Mustafa Jabbar, President of Bangladesh Computer Samity (BCS) was present as the chief guest at the product launching ceremony. B M Inam Lenin, Editor of Computer Bichitra (a monthly ICT magazine) conducted the ceremony. He welcomed everyone and introduced the three owners of Miracom Technologies Ltd. It is interesting to note that these three owners are very close friends. Then, Mustafa Jabbar talked about the various aspects of ICT industry in Bangladesh. He stated that Bangladesh was a very good market for laptop computers. He said that at this moment, many users in the country are getting interested about laptops. It seems that a tremendous growth in laptop sale will take place in the Bangladeshi market in near future and the market share of laptop will increase a lot compared to desktop computers.

Mr. Jabbar praised the initiative of Miracom Technologies Ltd. in bringing in expensive laptops in the local market. He viewed that these laptops are indeed powerful compared to most laptops in the same price range.

In the press conference, a number of questions were raised by the journalists. Someone asked about the warranty of the laptops and the owners of Miracom Technologies Ltd. informed that there was one year warranty and three-year free service. I asked about battery life. The owners informed me that within a few months, they have a plan to market all their laptops with 6 hours of battery life.

Here, I am giving a translated version of the speech read in the press conference:

Dear Journalists,

Bangladesh has huge potential despite having different problems. Using information technology is inevitable in order to utilize this potential. It is necessary to create skilled manpower who are educated in science and technology. When the whole world is getting developed with the blessings of information technology, people in our country remain far away from using information technology. This discrimination is only because of the economic insolvency. From the point of view of economics, the level of poverty in our country is so low that people in our country think that using computer is nothing but a mere fashion and it does only come to their imagination. Despite having huge interest, most of the people in our country have remained out of the light of information technology because of high price. Keeping all these matters in mind, we have selected our imported notebooks considering the ordinary people of our country.
