World number one Dinara Safina and most of the other top women’s seeds at the U.S. Open sailed through to the second round, but unfortunately, Ana Ivanovic was thrown  out of the tournament by Ukraine’s Kateryna Bondarenko.

Safina, endured a shock from Australian teen Olivia Rogowska, winning the game 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-4.

Number six seed Svetlana Kuznetsova beat Julia Goerges of Germany, 6-3 6-2, Elena Dementieva sailed past France’s Camille Pin, 6-1 6-2, and Jelena Jankovic thrashed Roberta Vinci of Italy, 6-2 6-3.

The loss for Ivanovic, 6-2 3-6 6-7, comes after an unsatisfactory summer. She also went out of the Rogers Cup in the second round in August and could not endure the fourth-round Wimbledon match in June due to an injury.

Belgian star Kim Clijsters and the Williams sisters also made it to the second round.
