The modern day ‘Karzzzz’ is novel: Satish Kaushik on Himesh Reshammiya’s new movie
Satish Kaushik is a great actor and director. As a director, he has movies like Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja, Prem, Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain, Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai, and Tere Naam to his credit. In 2008, he directed Himesh Reshammiya’s latest movie, Karzzzz, the remake of director Subhash Ghai’s 1980’s phenomenal movie, Karz. In an interview with Rediff correspondent, Swati R. Chaudhary, the director talks about his experience of making the movie.
It was Himesh Reshammiya and Bhushan Kumar, owner of T-series, who came up with the idea of remaking the movie. When they talked with Satish Kaushik for directing the movie, he instantly agreed. Satish Kaushik is an avid Hindi movie viewer and he grew up watching the cinemas of the 80’s. He always enjoyed the Hindi commercial cinema. To him, directing Karzzzz was an opportunity to pay homage to the 80s Hindi cinema.
Before making the movie, T-series acquired the rights of the movie from Subhash Ghai. Neither Subhash Ghai nor Rishi Kapoor, who played the male lead in Karz (1980), objected about the remake. They wished them success. While comparing the remake with original, Satish Kaushik said,
We have retained the core essence of the film. The basic story line is intact and so is the cult song, Ek hasina thi. We have retained the soul of Karz. The modern day Karzzzz is novel, it has a strong visual appeal and the music caters to today’s generation, though the original music is timeless.
Satish Kaushik highly praised Himesh Reshammiya. He said that Himesh Reshammiya fit into the character of ‘Monty’ perfectly because he himself is a successful singer in real life and ‘epitomises’ the role.
Regarding Urmila Matondkar, Satish Kaushik said that compared to Simi Garewal’s ‘Kamini,’ his ‘Kamini’ was more aggressive and venomous. Shweta Kumar is the daughter of Indra Kumar who is Satish’s friend. As they were looking for a new face, Satish zeroed on Shweta Kumar. Though a new comer, Shweta Kumar was very natural in front of the camera.
