She never played the female lead in any movie, never danced in skimpy outfits, but that could not stop actress Shefali Shah showcasing her acting prowess. No matter how small or insignificant the role is, she always played it with grace. She is one of those rare breed of actresses who won the hearts of the crowd and critics for their talented performance on the screen.

In her movie career, Shefali Shah mostly appeared in parallel cinemas. Her latest movie, Last Lear is also a parallel cinema, directed by famous movie maker, Rituparno Ghosh. In an interview, the actress talks about her experience of working in The Last Lear.

In The Last Lear, Shefali Shah plays the character of Vandana, who lives with Harish Mishra (Amitabh Bachchan). They are not married but they love and respect each other very much. According to Shefali, Vandana is a very impulsive person. She always follows her heart. Despite the huge age difference between Vandana and Harish, Vandana lives with her without thinking about what the society would say.

This is not the first time Shefali Shah is sharing screen with Amitabh Bachchan. In 2005, she did another movie Waqt: The Race Against Time. In that movie, Shefali played the role of Amitabh Bachchan’s wife. Shefali Shah thinks very highly of Amitabh Bachchan as an actor. In The Last Lear, they did not share too many scenes together but they had a great on screen chemistry which had been made possible for Amitabh Bachchan’s ability to bond with his co-stars. Shefali Shah said that viewers would be puzzled with their relationship.

Interestingly, it was Amitabh Bachchan who brought Shefali Shah into this movie. She said:

Actually Amitji called me for this role. He said, “Rituda is making this film and I want you to do this role.” Post that Rituda also called me and he narrated the script. When I read the script, I thought Vandana’s role was the finest written roles in the film and said yes immediately.

Another interesting fact about Shefali Shah is that most her movies are in English language such as, 15 Park Avenue, Monsoon Wedding, Gandhi My Father and The Last Lear. Shefali Shah has no problems with English language. Since The Last Lear is about an actor, who plays Shakespearean drama, the language had to be in English to catch the essence of Shakespearean element.
