Synopsis: Karzzzz is a movie on re-incarnation, love, greed and payback. A remake of the Subhash Ghai’s famous 1980 movie, Karz, Karzzzz tells the story of Monty (Himesh Reshammiya), Tina (Shweta Kumar), and Kamini (Urmila Matondkar). Monty is a famous rock star in South Africa. He is very popular and has a huge fan following. He is worshipped like an idol. One day, Monty meets Tina in a party and it was love at first sight for both.

During one of his rehearsals, Monty goes in a trance and suddenly he visualizes a mansion, a temple, a beautiful girl. Monty then becomes unconscious.

Upon further investigation, Monty finds out that the visions are actually from his past life. The mansion belonged to a wealthy young man named Ravi Verma, who died in a tragic accident. Gradually, Monty comes to know that he was Ravi Verma in his previous life. Now, he is reborn as Monty. Ravi Verma was married to Kamini. Now, Monty is dating Kamini’s foster daughter, Tina. Kamini is a femme fatal who, with the help of Sir Juda, murdered Ravi to get hold of his money and property. Monty then finds out Ravi Verma’s mother and takes revenge on Kamini for her misdeeds.

Karzzzz trivia:

• Karzzzz is the remake of Subhash Ghai’s hit movie Karz. It released in 1980.

• The story of Karzzzz revolves around reincarnation which was once a popular theme among Bollywood movie makers. Rakesh Roshan is famous for his reincarnation movies. Karan Arjun (1995) and Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai (2000) are among his most successful movies. Stories of both these movies are on re-incarnation.

• Singer, music-composer turned actor, Himesh Reshammiya, played the central role in Karzzzz.

• In Karzzzz, Himesh Reshammiya is playing the role of a successful rock singer, Monty. This role was played by Rishi Kapoor in original Karz. About his role, Himesh Reshammiya said:

“Rishi Kapoor is the most good-looking Monty ever, and I’m the worst. My sister Roopa has worked really hard on my looks and the hairstyle, to be specific. I hope you guys will manage to cooperate with that look!”

• Karzzzz was announced on January 25, 2008. The movie was mostly shot in South Africa. The shooting of Karzzzz was completed in 40 days.

• For his role, Himesh Reshammiya donned a new hairstyle. He also lost weight and did body building. Himesh Reshammiya also did few fight sequences in the movie.

• Karzzzz is the debut movie of actress Shweta Kumar. She is playing the character of Himesh Reshammiya’s love interest, Tina. In the original Karz, this role was played by actress Tina Munim.

• In Karzzzz, Urmila Matondkar played a negative character, Kamini. In Subhash Ghai’s Karz, this role was played by Simi Garewal. About her role, she said:

“I am excited that I am coming out with two films after a long gap. The teaser promos of Karzzzz have generated a lot of curiosity. It is rocking the market. I get so many messages everyday…Nobody is grey even at 90 today…My Kamini is so rich that she can own a cosmetic company. My role is almost the same as Simi Garewal except for a few dramatic changes. I have tried to play the role in a different manner. She is rich, confident and very glamorous. She is always in control of herself.”

• Urmila Matondkar did an item song with Himesh Reshammiya. The song titled ‘Tandoori Nights,’ were sung by Himesh Reshammiya and Sunidhi Chauhan.

• In Karzzzz, famous Bollywood actor, Gulshan Grover, played the role of evil don, Sir Judah. This role was played by Premnath in Karz (1980). Gulshan Grover always experiments with his looks and style in movies.

The producer Bhushan Kumar left no stone unturned to give Gulshan the mean edge in playing the role of Sir Judah. The whole amount was spent on his entire look — hair, clothes, accessories etc which also includes a metallic hand!!! Gulshan Grover claims, “This is the most expensive look ever spent on any persons get-up in a Hindi movie!!! My platinum look including the make-up and my metallic arm costs a bomb!”

The wardrobe of Sir Judah was designed by Falguni Thakore. To give him a unique look, she used silver suit, silver rings, silver earrings, silver beard, a metallic silver hand, dark glasses covered with silver tints and a red cravat.

• The music of Karzzzz is composed by Himesh Reshammiya. He also sang all the songs. Karzzzz‘s music album contains, two re-mastered tracks, seven original tracks and ten remix songs. The music was an instant hit like the music album of Himesh Reshammiya’s debut movie, Aap Ka Surroor-The Real Luv Story.

• On February 16, 2008, Himesh Reshammiya recorded one song of Karzzzz by giving a live performance in South Africa.

• The sound recording of Karzzzz was entirely done in Singapore.

• At the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2009’s first show, Himesh Reshammiya first performed two songs from Karzzzz. They are: “Lut Jaaon” and “Ek Haseena Thi.”

• NRI Punjabi pop singer, Kulwinder Kally, accused Himesh Reshammiya of stealing the song titled “Soniya Je Tere” from his album. Himesh Reshammiya vehemently opposed the claim. Kulwinder Kally said:

“This song is being sung by Himesh but this is actually my song. It came out in my cassette ‘Sham Wali Gaddi’ which I had released around 4 years back. Himesh has stolen this song from my cassette. I demand the removal of this song from the film. I have sent them a legal notice and charged them with 5 crore.”

Kulwinder Kally said that the song was originally written by a Pakistani lyricist named Shaonki Khan. He said that he owned the copyright of this song and told Himesh Reshammiya and Sameer to remove the song from the album within the next 15 days. On the other hand, Himesh Reshammiya said that Bhushan Kumar had given him permission for the song.

• The music of 1980 Karz was done by famous music composer duo, Laxmikant- Pyarelal. In the remake version of Karz, Himesh Reshammiya composed the music. Pyarelal called Himesh Reshammiya on the phone and told him to sing the songs of Karzzzz. Though an old person, Pyarelal possesses the keen sense of music and he is also a strict judge. Himesh Reshammiya came to his house and played in front of him. Times of India reports:

He sat at the music genius’ feet and strummed the golden hit Ek Haseena Thi (which had Rishi Kapoor and Simi Garewal) on his guitar. Some 20 minutes later, a visibly pleased Pyarelal gave Himesh a thumbs up. He was happy with the musical remake of Karz. Pyarelal said, “Himesh is a multi-talented person. And I can see it clearly.” And he gave Himesh his blessings for Karzzzz, which is directed by Satish Kaushik and produced by Bhushan Kumar.

• Himesh Reshammiya said that he while singing ‘Ek Hasina Thi,’ he did not use his signature nasal twang.

• Normally, for the music promotion of Bollywood movies, one promotional song is released in each week. In case of Karzzzz, T-series broke the norm and released three promotional songs in one week.
