Dostana is a romantic comedy with a homosexual twist. Sameer and Kunal are two friends and looking for apartments in Miami. Finally they find one. The landlady of the apartment has a niece named Neha. Neha works in famous fashion magazine, Verve. She is independent, sassy, and sexy. In the beginning, the landlady does not want to rent the room to Sameer and Kunal because she does not want young men to corrupt her niece. Determined and desperate, Sameer and Kunal pose as gay couple and move in. Gradually, both of them gets attracted to Neha. In the mean time, Abhimanyu, Neha’s boss, appears in the story and the situation becomes more critical, confusing and comic.
Trivia:
By this time, you have all seen John Abraham’s chiseled figure in Dostana. The actor worked under famous fitness trainer, Myke Ryan, from Los Angeles. In one of the scenes, John almost removed all his clothes. Since, John Abraham worked as a model earlier, he has no problems posing nude in front of the camera. The actor is very much comfortable with his body and he would not even hesitate to take off his clothes if the screen play demands.
Interestingly, the title Dostana has been taken from a movie made by Karan Johar’s father, late Yash Johar, in 1980. The 1980 Dostana was also a love triangle like the current one starring Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, and Zinat Aman. Talking about the movie, Karan Johar said that his father was going through a tough time but the three actors were very much cooperative.
Karan Johar was very much unhappy with the way Tarun Mansukhani shot the climax scene of Dostana. He re-shot the climax scene. He felt that the scenes lacked the ‘It’ factor. Instead of returning to Miami, the scenes were shot at the Goregaon Filmcity in Mumbai.
On her way to Miami for shooting the item number in Karan Johar’s Dostana, actress Shilpa Shetty’s seven suitcases were lost at the London airport. She had all her clothes and costumes in those suitcases. All she had was her handbag. Shilpa had no other option but to buy her dresses and cosmetics from London. She then went to Miami and shot the song. After the shooting was over, the airport authority informed Shilpa Shetty that her luggage had been found.
The promotional video of Dostana was picturised on ‘Maa Da Ladla.’ Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham shot separately for the song. Director Tarun Mansukhani did it as he wanted to make the song stand out from the rest. The music video was shot on 15th, 16th, and 17th September at Filmistan Studios.
In Dostana, Priyanka Chopra’s character, Neha, works in Verve, the famous fashion magazine. For the first time, Verve took part in any Hindi movie. The magazine also published a special issue titled “Dostana Special.†Priyanka Chopra appeared on the cover of the magazine.
The costumes of Dostana were designed by Aki Narula and Manish Malhotra. The designers started working on the clothes a year before the shooting started. They researched on what types of clothes the young generation would wear in future and designed some great costumes.
In Dostana, Priyanka Chopra wore a golden color swimsuit. The swimsuit was designed by Manish Malhotra. In order to look stunning in front of the camera, Priyanka Chopra worked very hard.
Two scenes were cut off from Dostana in order to obtain a U/A certificate from the Indian censor board. In one scene, John Abraham tells Priyanka Chopra that Abhishek Bachchan was impotent and she breaks into laughter. The Censor board also objected to a background score which sounded like,‘What the F****.’ Actually, the score says, “What the funk.â€
Though John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan pretended to be gay couple in Dostana, it is Bobby Deol, who played the real gay character in the movie. In one of the scenes, he had a dialogue “Sex Karna Hoga.†The Censor board told Karan to cut the dialogue as it was very suggestive.
