Synopsis: Karzzzz is a remake of Subhash Ghai’s 1980’s hit movie Karz. The movie is based on theme of reincarnation. Interestingly, Subhash Ghai’s Karz was inspired from another Hollywood movie, The Reincarnation of Peter Proud (1975). The story of Karzzzz is similar to that of the original Karz. Monty is a rock star who lives in South Africa. He is a talented singer and immensely popular over there. One day, during a rehearsal, Monty plays a tune and suddenly he goes in a trance. He sees various images and then he becomes unconscious. Upon finding out Monty comes to know that he was a billionaire businessman named Ravi Verma in his previous life and those images were from his past life. Ravi Verma was killed in an accident. After his death, his wife, Kamini, inherits all his wealth. Meanwhile, Monty meets the love of his life, Tina. Monty then finds out Ravi Verma’s mother. He comes to know that Kamini actually murdered him. He then punishes her for her misdeeds.

First things first, Karzzzz is a pure entertainer. T-series, producer of Karzzzz, did not promise something extra-ordinary. It is just another ‘leave your brains at home’ type masala movie. Satish Kaushik has handled the movie quite well. Karzzzz is not just a copy of Subhash Ghai’s Karz. Shiraz Ahmed, the script writer of the movie, did not entirely copy the original Karz. He inserted his own twist which makes the movie a novel idea. This may not go down well with people who have seen and loved Rishi Kapoor starrer Karz. Karzzzz is made to cater the taste of multiplex Hindi movie goers. They will love it as an entertainer.

The first half of the Karzzzz is alright. In the second half, the movie kind of loses its momentum. glamsham.com says

The movie begins well and keeps you glued to the screen even though you know what will happen. Full marks to Satish Kaushik here. But it is only towards the interval and beyond that the loose ends begin to show. Foremost among them being Urmila Matondkar, who plays Princess Kamini who has killed Ravi Varma. Twenty-five years later, when Ravi Varma is reborn as Monty, Kamini has not aged a single day. In fact she looks as old, if not younger than Himesh!

Now, let us look at the heart of Karzzzz and that will be definitely, none other than Himesh Reshammiya. It seems like as an actor Himesh Reshammiya has evolved a lot. In fact, if you are one of those dedicated Himesh Reshammiya fans, then you will love him in the movie. Interestingly, the reviews I have read so far either praised him a lot or just wrote him off as an actor with ‘zero’ acting capabilities. Sify movies says:

On to the premise then: Monty is a rock star with Cruella De Ville-type parents who call him a sone ke ande dene waala murga. Reshammiya who plays Monty invites your wrath immediately. Because the name takes you back to the full-of-vibes, utterly charming Rishi Kapoor who immortalized this character. Here, Himesh with silken hair extensions, a waxed chest shown off in unbuttoned shirts, and inaccurate guitar strumming, is hardly believable as a star who attracts the ladies. Plus, the idea of a `rock star’ is vague in today’s times; this concept simply doesn’t exist!

Taran Adarsh says:

Himesh may not have the charisma of SRK, he may not be talented like Aamir, he may not be dashing and debonair as Salman and Akshay, but you can’t turn your eyes away from the fact that he has oodles of confidence and that makes the job easier. Also, comparisons with Rishi Kapoor are inevitable. Well, Rishi Kapoor was matchless and KARZ continues to remain a shining medal to this date, but even the harshest of critics would agree that Himesh is here to stay.

Urmila Matondkar is a talented actress but she could have done better. There were lots of room for her improvement. One of the major allegations against her character ‘Kamini’ is that twenty five years have passed since ‘Kamini’ killed Ravi Verma but when Monty and Kamini meets, she does not look old a bit. She looks very young. Plus, Urmila’s make up was very loud; the red lipstick and the red dress and tight gowns. Another sequence that irritated that audience is where Kamini and Monty goes on a walk and she wears a golden dress which made her look like she is going to attend some party. khabrein.info says:

But the auditorium suddenly bristles with energy when Princess Kamini walks in, in a completely OTT backless red gown, her ample bosom on display and geisha-girl inspired makeup (Urmila’s scarlet lip colour won’t be easily forgotten). There is considerable magic in the basic premise of the plot in the second half – a rock star seducing a rich widower twice his age, who also happens to be his murderer. Himesh is surprisingly impressive in some sequences, while Urmila, the seasoned actress that she is, holds your attention with her convincing villainy. Yes, her makeup is way too loud, and her pout quite comical, but what the heck, she is the only eye candy in this film.

Acting wise, Shweta Kumar does good for a new-comer but her’s is a small character. The story of Karzzzz mainly revolves around Monty and Kamini. Dino Morea as Ravi Verma did a good job. Gulshan Grover’s ‘Sir Juda’ is not as powerful as Premnath’s ‘Sir Juda’ in the original Karz. Raj Babbar and Danny Denzongpa were ok.

Another plus point of the movie is its climax. Every body like the climax it was well shot. Sify movies says:

The flat cinematography has a perplexing penchant for unflattering extreme close-ups and there were shots when the heroine’s face (usually given super-priority) was lit up badly. The final helicopter scene, however, has been handled extremely well; clearly the most gripping portion of the film.

So far, the best thing about T-series is that they know how to make movies that will bring people to the theatres. Moreover, Karzzzz is released at a good time. Now, there are no other big banner movies in theatres. Hence, analysts are saying that Karzzzz will have a great start in the theatres and it will gradually rise up to become one of the most successful movies of 2008. The music, the glitz and glamour, actor, everything is done in such a way that people will have a great time watching the movie. In one word, Karzzzz is a paisa-vasool movie. If you want to have a good time in theatres then go ahead and watch Karzzzz.
