Hissss: Mallika Sherawat is the next Naagin of Bollywood
In her upcoming movie, actress Mallika Sherawat played the role of a ‘femme fatal’ but of a different kind. Her upcoming movie, Hissss, tells the story of a snake woman who takes revenge on people for capturing her lover.
Hissss is produced by Vikram Singh and Govind Menon of Split Image Pictures. The movie is directed by Jennifer Lynch. Other major actors include, Irrfan Khan and Jeff Douchett. Already, two images released by the production company have created a lot of buzz in the industry.
The story goes like this. The legend of Naagin (Snake Woman) has been spreading around India for the last 4000 years. In 2009, a ruthless American named George States (Jeff Douchette) visits the Indian jungle and steals the mate of the Naagin. In order to free her mate and punish the perpetrators, the Naagin turns into a beautiful woman and goes out in search of her lover. Without knowing anything about the modern civilization, the Naagin gets into the city and tries to find her lover.
Snake has a special place in Indian mythology and Indian culture. The concept of Naagin, a beautiful shape shifting woman who can transform into a venomous snake is a theme widely exploited by Bollywood movie makers. Nagina, Jaani Dushman and Naagin are some of the successful movies made on Naagin.
The director of Hissss, Jennifer Lynch is the daughter of famous American director, David Lynch. Her last movie, Surveillance, was screened at the Cannes Film Festival 2008. As a director Jennifer Lynch is trying to make Hissss a thriller movie like Silence of the Lambs, Predator.
Famous special effect artist, Robert Kurtzman, has been given the responsibility of special effects of Hissss. He worked as a make-up artist in movies like Vanilla Sky, Pulp Fiction, Spy Kids and Evil Dead. screenindia.com says:
The kind of make-up used is MUFX (prosthetic make-up) which is a technology that has won numerous awards. Two make-up artists have been working on Mallika’s look and the material she wears is so slimy that at times it just sticks to the skin. What’s more Madame Sherawat can’t even move in her natural way with her make-up and at times is even carried to the sets. As for those scary eyes, Mallika is seen wearing some really huge contact lenses to get the desired effect.
Whether the movie will work in America or not, I do not know but I am sure that it will be a great entertainer for the Indian audience. Never before, they have seen a ‘Naagin’ movie like this. The character ‘Naagin’ is well detailed and the special effects will make it an ideal entertainer. Hissss will be released in middle of 2009.
