ICL’s debut team Dhaka Warriors started their ICL journey with a 6-wicket defeat to Chennai Superstars on 11 October 2008. Winning the toss, Dhaka Warriors captain Habibul Bashar elected to bat first and the openers brought a good start for the Warriors, putting on 22 runs within 3 overs. Opener Shahriar Nafees scored 18 runs, while Nazimuddin got out on 20. However, highest 30 runs came from Aftab Ahmed’s bat. Aftab played a quick fire innings with 3 boundaries and 2 over-boundaries.

Habibul Bashar and Alok Kapali failed in the middle order, but Dhiman Ghosh’s 21, Farhad Reza’s 12 and a 12-ball 17 from Mohammad Rafique helped Warriors to reach a fighting total of 142 for Chennai Superstars. T Kumaran and Vignesh both took 2 wickets each for Chennai Superstars. Syed Mohammad, however, was excellent as he conceded only 12 runs from his 4 overs with one wicket.

Chasing 143, Chennai could not have asked for a better start than what their two openers: Ian Harvey and Ganapathi Vignesh- brought in the match. These two hard hitters put on 61 runs for the opening stand within 3.4 overs. Harvey scored 28 off 13 balls, while his opening partner Vignesh scored 25 off 10 balls. Later on, Chennai’s Russel Arnold ensured an easy victory with his 42-ball 42 not out. For Warriors bowlers, the two pacers looked ordinary in front of Harney and Vignesh, but spinner Mohammad Rafique won some momentum for Warriors, taking 2 wickets. However, that was not enough to win the match as Warriors pacers conceded too much runs earlier in the innings. J Syed Mohammad was awarded the man of the match award for his economical bowling and taking the important wicket of Aftab Ahmed.
