Another high profile Williams sisters’ match is coming up next in the quarter final of U.S. Open 2008. On Sunday, both the sisters clinched their fourth round victories to set up another family affair in the quarter final. With some of the favorites including top seed Ana Ivanovic already out of the tournament, both the sisters are top favorite for this year’s US Open title. However, there are many who are unhappy to see Williams sisters meeting in the quarter final, with many considering it too early to feature the two sisters against each other, given their prowess and recent form in evidence. Serena Williams vs Venus Williams quarter final match of U.S. Open 2008 will take place at Flushing Meadows on 3 September 2008.

Both Serena and Venus won their respective fourth round encounters with sheer ease and pulled off straight set victories to reach the quarter final. Serena Williams defeated French wild card entry Severine Bremond 6-2, 6-2, giving little chance to her in-form French opponent. Serena Williams continued her dominant displays against French wild card opposition with 24 winners against 11 unforced errors.

Elder sister Venus Williams got comparatively a stronger opponent in ninth-seeded Polish youngster Agnieszka Radwanska, but the result was same as the Wimbledon champion Venus reeled off an easy victory 6-1, 6-3. In short, Venus Williams outclassed her young opponent in the match with converting 42 percent of her first serves in the first set. However, Serena was in more control with her first serves against Severine Bremond as the eight time grand slam title winner as she converted 69 percent of her first serves in the match.

Venus Williams often went to the net against Radwanska, effectively clinching the points with her pace and skill. In the first set, she came in 15 times in which she won points in 13 times. In total, she won 25 out of 34 points by her coming-in approaches. In her post-match interview, Venus admitted that she likes coming in.

Neither of the sisters dropped any set so far in the tournament with Venus losing only 15 games and Serena 14 all through their four matches in U.S. Open 2008 so far. Serena Williams suffered only one service break till fourth round, while Venus conceded three service breaks through four matches until now. Since Wimbledon to U.S. Open 2008, Venus Williams has not lost any set, while younger sister Serena lost only two sets which came against Venus in the final of Wimbledon this year. No doubt, both of them are playing at their prime at this moment.

Serena Williams lost to Venus Williams in this year’s Wimbledon final. So, Serena must be gearing up to take a sweet revenge when she will take on her elder sister on 3rd August. Both the sisters know each other very well as they play together in women’s doubles and practice under together in family surroundings. Williams sisters clinched their second doubles Olympic gold medal in Beijing recently. So, it would not be too easy for neither of them to capitalize on the weak sides of each other, because they know what are the strength and weakness of them.

Serena Williams vs Venus Williams: Head to Head

This is not the first time two sisters are going to face each other in a grand slam tournament. In fact, Venus and Serena Williams faced each other on seven occasions in grand slam final with Serena winning on five times and Venus twice. In total, the two sisters played against each other on 17 times- in which Serena Williams won nine times (including the 2001 Indian Wells semi final where Venus withdrew herself due to injury) and Venus eight times.

In U.S Open, the two sisters met each other thrice- 2001 and 2002 finals, and fourth round of 2005 Open. In 2001, Venus won the title, but lost to Serena in the 2002 titles. Then, Venus defeated Serena in the round of 16 of U.S. Open 2005.

What Venus and Serena Williams are Thinking?

Both the sisters are not happy with facing each other in the quarter final, but determined to do well in the match. However, both admitted that it was going to be a tough match for both of them. Here, I am quoting some lines from their post-match interview from Fox Sports:

Serena Williams said:

“Even the semis would have been better than the quarterfinals, but at least one of us will make it to the semis,” Serena told the crowd during an on-court interview. “I’ve got probably the toughest match of the tournament coming up next, so I’ve got to be ready.”

Venus Williams said:

“I would love to have a winning record,” Venus said. “I have a chance.”

“The best part is that we’re still here,” Venus said, “going stronger than ever, in my opinion.”

When Venus and Serena take on each other, it is really very difficult to pick one of them as favorite. Both of them play power tennis and are immensely strong in their shots and pace, with sheer amount of skill and quality. So, Serena Williams would like to take the revenge of her defeat to elder sister in the final of Wimbledon 2008, while Venus will try her best to reach the semi final in her pursuit to win the US Open title for the first time since 2001 U.S. Open. So, I think, an interesting match is waiting there in the quarterfinal of U.S. Open 2008.
