Serena Williams reached the semi final of U.S. Open 2008 after clinching a hard-fought victory over Venus Williams. The two sisters presented with a classic match in which both the sisters looked confident. However, Venus made few mistakes in crucial moments, while Serena held her nerve well in decisive moments. That is what made the difference in the match. Serena had to face hard challenge to pull off the straight set victory 7-6 (6), 7-6 (7). Serena Williams will now face Russian Dinara Safina who secured a semi final spot defeating Italy’s Flavia Pennetta, seeded 16th, in straight set 6-2, 6-3.

In her post-match reaction, Serena Williams said, she felt like she deserved a trophy after the match. That is how she expressed how hard it was to win over Venus Williams. In both the sets, Serena came from 5-3 down and saved eight set points in the second set. The fourth seed also admitted that she was lucky in the sense that Venus Williams made some mistakes that she usually does not. Venus Williams credited her younger sister for excellent performance and admitted that she had never played a match like this.

It was a match that would have been better to be in the final. Actually, I think, this match deserves to be a classic one in the history of the grand slam. Now, let us see if Serena Williams can continue her excellent form against Dinara Safina as well in the semi final.
