Madhur Bhandarkar is one of the top movie directors in Bollywood but he did not rise to prominence by making typical masala flicks. He has a reputation for making movies that deal with serious social issues. Movies like Chandni Bar, Traffic Signal, Corporate, Page 3, earned him the reputation of a great movie maker.

Madhur Bhandarkar is going to receive his third National Award for Traffic Signal. He is also going to receive a cash prize worth Rs. 2,50,000. Madhur Bhandarkar decided to give the prize money to poverty stricken farmers of Maharashtra.

From 2004 till now, 5,000 Maharashtrian farmers committed suicide as they failed to clear their debts. Since 2001, more than 90,000 farmers all over India committed suicide due to their inability to clear their debts. Madhur Bhandarkar, who also hails from a Maharashtrian Brahmin family, is well aware of the problem. He has decided to play a small part to help the farmers. He said:

“I am aware about the problems being faced by the farmers and the way they have suffered for all these years. I had always wished to do my own bit for this and since this is a noble cause, I decided to donate the prize money to three such families”,

The money will be given to three ladies: Kamal Waghmare, Sangeeta Prakash Darne and Sugandha Kannake. Each of them has tragic tales. On September 5, 2008, Madhur Bhandarkar will personally go to Nagpur to handover the money to these people.
