Russian tennis star Elena Dementieva stormed into the semi final of U.S. Open 2008 by defeating Swiss opponent Patty Schnyder in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. Fifth seed Dementieva cruised through the 76-minute affair with sheer dominance. Schnyder also admitted in her post-match interview that she had lost to a great champion in her quarter final encounter. Schnyder, seeded 15th, gave the due credit to Dementieva, saying that she was not given any chance in the match as Dementieva was on top of herself in the match.

Elena Dementieva was very happy with the way she knocked out Schnyder in the match, admitting that she expected a tough match against Schnyder. The gold medalist of Beijing Olympic said that it was very important to win the match in two sets after coming from Beijing because thus she got extra time for recovery.

Dementieva broke Schnyder in only the third game of the first set. The Russian was overall excellent all through the match. All know that Dementieva does not have a great serve; rather she often suffers for he poor serves. However, the US Open finalist of 2004 showed some brilliant piece of serving, keeping 80 percent success on her first serve. Moreover, Dementieva was serving with sheer pace as well and her ground strokes were also up to the mark. She continued her excellent form in the second set too. So, there was no way Schnyder could make a come back in the match.

Elena Dementieva will face either second seed Jelena Jankovic or 29th seed Sybille Bammer in the semi final of the tournament. Despite her excellent form, Dementieva thinks she needs to improve her game in order to make it to the final and she does not think that she has showed her best against Patty Schnyder; rather her perfect form is far away from what she featured in the quarter final. Herein lies an alarm for Jankovic or Bammer ahead of the semi final match.
