Title: Billo Barber

Director: Priyadarshan

Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Irrfan Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Lara Dutta.

This Diwali, Shah Rukh Khan is coming with, Billo Barber. It is a movie on friendship. The movie is a remake of 2007 hit Malayalam movie, Katha Parayumpol. Sreenivasan, who wrote the story of Katha Parayumpol, took the story of Lord Krishna and Sudama and presented it in a twentieth century style. It tells the story of Ashokraj (Mammootty) and Balan (Sreenivasan). Ashokraj and Balan were childhood friends. Ashokraj became a big movie star and Balan ended up becoming a street barber. After many years, when Ashokraj returned to his village to shoot a movie, every body wanted to see the superstar and suddenly Balan became the center of attention as the villagers came to know that he was Ashokraj’s childhood friend. Sreenivasan’s movie mainly focuses on Balan and shows what happens between two friends.

In 2008, Kuselan (Tamil) and Kathanayakudu (Telugu) are inspired from Katha Parayumpol. Tamil superstar, Rajinikanth starred in both these movies. However, both the remakes were different from the original as they focused on superstar Rajinikanth.

Problems with Billo Barber and Kuselan:

Shah Rukh Khan’s Billo Barber is going to be released in Diwali. However, Hindi version of Rajinikath’s Kuselan, was scheduled to be released earlier. This has worried Shah Rukh Khan. He was afraid that Kuselan could affect Billo Barber. For this reason, Shah Rukh Khan requested Rajinikanth to release the Hindi version of Kuselan after the release Billo Barber.

In another news report, Priyadarshan was quoted saying that they could have finished Billo Barber much earlier but Shah Rukh Khan got busy with IPL. Priyadarshan also said that Kuselan and Billo Barber were very much different except the climax.

While talking about the Hindi version release of Kuselan, Priyadarshan said that Sreenivasan gave the Tamil rights of his movie to the producers after talking with Priyadarshan. The movie makers signed a contract under which their movies will be released in their parent language but not in other language.

“But the contract clearly says that Kuselan cannot be dubbed into any other language. Likewise, my Hindi version cannot be dubbed by producer SRK in any other language except the parent lingo, Hindi. We clearly put all this under contract to avoid the kind of overlapping that was attempted . . . . I’ll avoid this kind of a clash of interests at any cost.”

At the end of the day, will Billo Barber be able to show its magic at the box office like Om Shanti Om in 2007? Well, to get answer to that question, you have to wait till Diwali.
