Jelena Jankovic pulled off another hard-fought victory in the third round of U.S. Open 2008 against Wimbledon semi finalist Zheng Jie of China 7-5, 7-5. The score line suggests how closely contested match it was. Jankovic took little more than two hours to secure the victory in which the final game of the match had 28 points played to decide the winner with 11 deuces.

With the elimination of top seed Ana Ivanovic and third seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, Jelena Jankovic, second seed, has become the top seed in women’s singles. She is one of the possible six women who could be raked no. 1 in WTA ranking at the end of the tournament. However, the Serbian star appeared with full of power and hard worked in her victory over China’s Zheng Jie, without showing any mark of her injurious left leg in her performance. Jelena Jankovic suffered a cramp in her left leg following her Wednesday match. Jankovic will face Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in the fourth round of the tournament.
