Top seed Rafael Nadal progressed to the fourth round of U.S. Open 2008 after cruising through the third round match against Viktor Troicki. The Spaniard looked formidable in the match as he pulled off the straight set victory 6-4, 6-3, 6-0. In the fourth round, Nadal will meet unseeded opponent Sam Querrey from U.S.A.

Nadal appeared with his top flight whenever required in the match to make his way to the fourth round of US Open 2008. The Serbian produced some challenges in the first set, but Rafael Nadal proved to be too strong to Troicki in the final two sets as the Spaniard rallied to win final 11 games to see off his opponent.

About his upcoming match against Sam Querrey, the Olympic gold medalist said Querrey had improved a lot, indicating his powerful serve. For Querrey, who managed a hard-fought third round victory over Croatian Ivo Karlovic, this is going to be his first fourth round grand slam appearance when he will take on four-time French Open and current Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal.

World no. 2 Jelena Jankovic reached the quarter final of US Open 2008 on Sunday as the Serbian got by another hard-fought meeting at Flushing Meadow. Second seed Jankovic defeated Danish Caroline Wozniacki in the three-set encounter 3-6 6-2 6-1. However, she was pushed all the way in the match by Wozniacki and needed to come back from a set down.

England vs South Africa 5th ODI 2008: England Eyeing on 5-0 Sweep

August 31, 2008 by Biplob Kishore Deb · Comment
Filed under: Sports

Here are few incidents that you should first consider before going through the main topic. First, South Africa confirmed their third ever test series victory at England with a match at hand. Following that defeat at Birmingham in the third test, England’s test captain Michael Vaughan as well as ODI captain Paul Collingwood stepped down from captaincy job.

Second, South African-born English batsman Kevin Pietersen was given the job to lead England in test, ODI and twenty20 formats. Pietersen led England to a consolation victory in the last test. In ODI series, England is now leading by 4-0, winning all the four matches so far. Now, England team is hoping to make it 5-0, a mark that would hand England the second place in ICC ODI ranking.

There was hardly anyone who could think of a 5-0 sweep for England before the ODI series got underway. What looked implausible before the ODI series now looks very possible to happen with England requiring just another victory to whitewash South Africa.

There is no doubt, England will try their best to whitewash the visiting team in what they could earn the second place in the ODI ranking as well. For South Africa, it is a humiliating performance and the only way to go back home with some pride is to win the last match, reducing the margin to 4-1. Now, let us see if England can make it 5-0 or South Africa can manage to win the last match.

England vs South Africa 4th ODI 2008: England Clinched 7-Wicket Victory

August 31, 2008 by Biplob Kishore Deb · Comment
Filed under: Sports

England now needs one more win to claim a prestigious 5-0 sweep over visiting South Africa in the ongoing ODI series as the home side pulled off another easy victory in the fourth of the five-match ODI series on Sunday. In the rain-affected match, Kevin Pietersen sent South Africa to batting after winning the toss, but Andrew Flintoff’s all round performance helped England to claim a 7-wicket victory.

South Africa started off well as they reached 66 for no loss within 9 overs. However, following opener Hashim Amla’s departure on 34 through run out, South Africa started losing wickets regularly. Kallis failed once again when he got out on 1, being the first of the three victims of Flintoff. However, another opener Herschelle Gibbs was playing pretty confidently in his way to 74 off 75, but middle order batsmen like AB de Villiers, Jean-Paul Duminy failed to hold on the advantage opening pair handed them.

When South Africa reached 183 for 6 in 32.1 overs, rain interrupted the match for the second time. Taking three wickets for 21 from 7 overs, Andrew Flintoff became the most successful bowler for England. England was handed a revised target of 137 from 20 overs to win the match.

England did not have any problem to reach the target, despite losing early wicket. Opener Matt Prior went out for a duck, putting some pressure on the host side. However, relentless English batsmen hit back strongly. Coming at no. 3 Owais Shah remained not out on 44 off 40, hitting four boundaries and a huge SIX. Captain Kevin Pietersen was also supporting him very well and at one point it looked Shah and Pietersen would finish off the match. However, England captain got out on 40 from 34 balls in which he hit 5 boundaries and a SIX. Then Flintoff came to the wicket to play some devastating shots, accelerating England’s easy victory. His 12-ball 31 along with 3 wickets earned him the man of the match award.

England is now eyeing on a 5-0 whitewash of South Africa by winning the fifth and last ODI of the series, due to take place on 3 September 2008. A victory in the fifth ODI would help England retain the second place in the ICC One-Day team rankings after Australia. So, a lot of things are at stake for England ahead of the match, while South Africa would look for a consolation victory.
