Google with a Venture-Capital Arm: What about investing in Blogs?

There are reports that Google is serious about having a VC Arm. Wall Street Journal reported this matter and then I found an analysis in Gigaom: Google Eyeing a VC Arm? Written by Stacey Higginbotham. Well, Stacey Higginbotham is not upbeat about this matter. She thinks that it may not bring too much for Google.

I was thinking about the bloggers. I know that there are many bloggers who have brilliant ideas and they are eager to work hard to succeed. Many of them do not have the capital and also some of them don’t know about the technology either. So, may be, Google bosses can think about investing some money in the blogosphere. Or even better that Google can invest in blog networks. I am sure that some bloggers and blog network owners would love to have Google as its partner.

What do you think about it?

Sri Lanka vs India Second Test 2008: Virender Sehwag Ton Keeps India on Course

Audacious, outstanding, excellent, phenomenal, mind-blowing- the adjectives Sehwag’s 15th test century could be adorned with. The way he played the 128-run unbeaten innings has been a revelation. The bowler most suffered for his devastating batting was Ajantha Mendis, who conceded 29 runs in his first four overs.

Now, come to Muttiah Muralitharan, the man whom India was largely suffered by in the first test. Sehwag handled Muralitharan with the same guile and style he did for Mendis. In fact, the two spinners did little against spirited Sehwag on the first day of the second test. In the opening partnership with Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag added 167 runs which made the ground of Indian innings. Though the later batsmen could not carry on winning momentum thanks to a short collapse in the middle order which saw four Indian batsmen going back to the pavilion within 11 runs, Virender Sehwag still remains at the crease as a constant threat for the Sri Lankan bowlers.

After the two poor batting performances in the first test, India went into the second test with a lot of pressure on their shoulder. Particularly, India’s seemingly invincible batting line up was under the radar. On the other hand, Sri Lanka did not have that much pressure going into the second test after their spirited first test win. So, there is no doubt, the stage was not ready for Sehwag, but he showed he had the ability to make his way to play such a classy innings.

At the end of the day, Virender Sehwag and VVS Laxman remain unbeaten at the wicket and they will definitely look to carry on their innings as long as possible tomorrow. Sehwag already expressed his wish to convert his century into double, helping India to reach around 400-500 in their first innings. So, Sri Lankan spinner seems to have something to worry about now. Let us see if Sehwag can continue his hard-hitting batting show tomorrow as well.

Sri Lanka vs India Second Test 2008: Day One Report

India batsmen, at last, could show a bit of their batting genius on the first day of the second test against Sri Lanka. After the humiliating batting performance in the first test, Indian batsmen were under pressure to perform well in the second test at Galle. Indian captain did not think much to decide to bat first after winning the toss.

Indian openers made a solid ground for the middle order batsmen, putting on 167 runs in the opening partnership, but Indian middle order failed to capitalize on that advantage as India lost four wickets within 11 runs, in which Chaminda Vaas hit twice in the same over to pick up the wickets of Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly. At the end of the day, Indian innings reached at 214 for 4 with Virender Sehwag batting on 128 and VVS Laxman on 13. Only 44.3 overs were played on the rain-curtailed first day of the test. Sri Lanka’s newly found spinner Ajantha Mendis took two wickets.

Opener Virender Sehwag played an outstanding knock of 128 just off 122, hitting 19 boundaries and 2 over-boundaries. To tell the truth, he was instrumental in India’s pursuit to regain the pride they lost after the first test. Another opener Gautam Gambhir supported Sehwag well, playing a well-organized innings of 56 runs. Except the openers, the rest of the top order continued to do the same thing they did in Colombo.

It is good for India that Sehwag is still in the crease and he could be lethal for Sri Lanka tomorrow, while Laxman can support him well to build up the innings. In order to put Sri Lankan batsmen under pressure, I think, India at least needs a score around 400-450 in the first innings. However, after Sehwag and Laxman, India has one specialized batsman- Dinesh Karthik- yet to come in the wicket.

So, it would not be easy for India to put 200 more runs on the board. To achieve that Sehwag and Laxman need to carry on their innings at least for a session and half tomorrow. Sri Lankan spinners did not look as dominating as they were in the first test and Sehwag did not let the opposition spinners go unpunished whenever they produced a loose delivery.

England vs South Africa Third Test 2008: Is there Any Chance for England?

July 31, 2008 by Biplob Kishore Deb · 1 Comment
Filed under: Sports

At this moment, England seems to be under pressure in the third test of the series against South Africa. You know that South Africa is leading in the series after clinching a 10-wicket victory over England in the second test at Headingley. So, winning the currently ongoing third test is very important for host side if they want to avoid the series defeat at home.

Well, South Africa seems to be in the driving seat at this moment as they have already reached at 205/4 at tea break in the second day, in reply to England’s first innings total of 231. Jacques Kallis and Ashwell Prince are leading South Africa to a big lead in the first innings. Two more specialist batsmen AB de Villiers and Mark Boucher are yet to come in the wicket. So, there is every possibility South Africa might take a lead of 150-200 runs, in what it would be very difficult for England to save this test.

England needs a few wickets at this moment in order to restrict South Africa’s first innings lead within 100 runs. To be honest, a victory for England is less likely a thing to happen at this situation, but it is cricket where anything can happen, and uncertainty is part and parcel of the game. So, I do not want to write off England’s chances in the third test yet, but for sure, England needs a miracle to level the series with a match still at hand.

England vs South Africa Third Test 2008: South Africa Set to Take Lead in the First Innings

In the ongoing third test of the four-match series between England and South Africa, the touring side is steadily going to take lead in the first innings. After England’s first innings got bundled out at 231, South Africa has already put 205 runs on the board losing four top order batsmen.

England’s middle order batsmen failed to continue the momentum given by their openers as South African pacers- Andre Nel, Jacques Kallis and Makhaya Ntini- halted England’s steady progress in the first innings. Opener Alastair Cook played an excellent innings of 76 off 125 balls, while in the middle of the innings Ian Bell contributed with his well-organized 50. Andrew Flintoff tired to build up the innings with the tail-enders, but that was of no avail. Flintoff remained not out at 36.

South Africa did not have a good start as they lost Captain Graeme Smith early in the innings. At the end of the first day, South Africa reached 38 for 1 with opener Neil McKenzie batting on 12 and night-watchman Paul Harris on 10. On the second day, Harris failed to carry on his innings as he fell on 19, leaving South Africa at 94/2. Hashim Amla came into the wicket, but failed to produce a big innings, falling to James Anderson for 9. However, opener Neil McKenzie carried on his innings to play an excellent 72-run knock, before becoming the second victim of Andrew Flintoff.

At this moment, it is tea break at Edgbaston on the second day and Jacques Kallis and Ashwell Prince are batting on 48 and 24 respectively, contributing 70 runs in the fifth wicket partnership.

Sri Lanka vs India Second Test: Sri Lanka Aware of an Expected Come Back by India

July 30, 2008 by Biplob Kishore Deb · 1 Comment

While Indian team is gearing up to start winning momentum soon after the second test at the Galle International Stadium gets underway, Sri Lankan side is expecting India to come back strongly and the host side is getting prepared for that. Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene has said that his side has alternative strategy if India makes a strong come back in the second test.

Sri Lankan skipper has also indicated that there might not be any change in the final eleven. Besides giving the due credit to two spinners Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis, Jayawardene also thinks that pacers could join the party in the condition like this (at Galle). The captain also thinks that with the arrival of Mendis, Muralitharan is now much more comfortable, knowing that he does not need to do all the works.

Galle is a lucky ground for Sri Lankan team as they lost only one of the last 9 test matches played at the stadium. However, Mahela Jayawardene does not want to take any psychological edge from their record at Galle, rather he focuses on the performance on a particular day against the opposition team. So, it is clear that Sri Lanka is very much aware of Indian’s expected come back in the second test.
